Exciting

Many exciting devlopments have taken place in our class over the past couple of weeks. For starters, we have chosen a name and logo for our Medical Spa: Sano. Sano means "to heal" in Latin and our logo includes three adjectives, refresh, recover, revitalize. We felt that conoted the intentions of our spa accurately. Now that we have a name and a logo, we are developing more marketing for Sano including a brochure, website, and folders to be distributed during presentations.

Speaking of presentations, the new UCF Med School has asked to meet with us to discuss our project and plans for our spa! Several members of our class are presenting to the Med School this Wednesday in Research Park. We are hoping to forge a partnership with the UCF Med School and see our visions of Sano realized. We were fortunate enough to have Dr. Keyvan Ariani return to our classroom this past Thursday to give us pointers on our PowerPoint presentation for the Med School. Dr. Ariani was so helpful in giving us a doctor's perspective on our project. After his visit we reorganized the entire presentation to reflect his useful suggestions. Now I think we are very prepared to present to the Med School. We have one more class this Tuesday where we will finalize the presentation and then its off to Research Park on Wednesday!

We have also completed a final blueprint for Sano. The Concept and Development team has been working hard to design a functional and artistic structure to house the spa and all of the offices, guest rooms, and municipal rooms. The spa will be a horseshoe shape with a garden in the middle of the "U."

Through the Pain Gate

This semester's Ad Lab project is called the Pain Gate. It is being offered as an Honors Interdisciplinary Seminar so our class is composed of students from many different disciplines including Art, Advertising and Public Relations, Event Management, Biology, Engineering, and Anthropology to name a few. Our class goal is to design an innovative center to help alleviate people's chronic pain. We have been compiling a lot of research on the different types of chronic pain as well as the traditional treatments doctors prescribe to treat chronic pain. Our concepts however are anything but traditional.

Our ideas have been ever evolving as we gather more information, speak with experts, and inspire each other. As of right now, we are focusing on designing a standalone building that will house our “MedSpa.” We are experimenting with innovative design ideas like circular architecture, chromotherapy, feng shui, virtual reality, and biofeedback.

We have had four guest speakers: Alex who taught us about Project Management, Dr. Ariani from the Florida Hospital Pain Management Center, Laurie who is a nurse practitioner and sufferer of chronic pain, and Dr. Hoekstra a professor in the Engineering department as well as an interior designer. Each guest speaker has been more informative than we could have imagined. Following each presentation, we adjust our ideas based on the new information; our ideas seem to become more focused and on target.

The Ad Lab class will present a booth at the Florida Statewide Symposium on Engagement in Undergraduate Research this Friday and Saturday. The keynote speaker, Jennifer Blackmer will be visiting the Ad Lab classroom on Friday before the expo begins.

We have a lot of work ahead of us including building a final model of our proposed spa but the path we are on looks promising. Despite the outcome of this class, the experiences we are having working together on this project are invaluable. Having such freedom as students is a bit scary and sometimes it feels like we are barreling ahead with this project blindly, however as Mr. Reedy reminds us during each class period, “vaulnerability is a strength not a weakness.”

Judgment Day

This evening the owners of Giovanni's Italian Restaurant came by to review the bars designed especially for their establishment.

Though there were many interesting pieces, the owners were able to narrow down the winners to three functional and aesthetic pieces. Each artist chosen was able to utilized the available space in the restaurant without forfeiting the elements of design.

And the winners are.....*drum roll*.....

The Summer 2008 Design 3d class would like to thank Giovanni's Italian Restaurant for the opportunity to help create the best design for their space.

Final Project, Mid-Critique

The class had a progress critique to help resolve any problems students may be having with building a model, writing an artist's statement, photographing work, or drawing a mock-blueprint.

Giovanni's Field Trip

The students had the opportunity to go to our client's establishment, Giovanni's Italian Restaurant & Pizzeria, and speak with the owners to better understand what they hope to see in a bar design. The class first took a trip to the Giovanni's in Lake Mary to take a look at the current bar, then traveled to the Giovanni's in Oviedo to study the space they are to designing for.
